"It's More Than Just A Song"
By Jerry Stewart
God Bless America
We all know the song, "God Bless
America", written by Irving Berlin
and made famous in 1938 by one very popular
singer, Miss Kate Smith.
But, have you thought about this? “God Bless
America” is not just a song, it’s a prayer,
and every time we sing it we’re saying:
“Please God, bless America, land that I
love.
Stand beside her and guide her through the
night with Your light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies, to the
oceans white with foam,
Please God, bless America, my home sweet
home”.
There are some in America today trying their
best to convince us that God really has
nothing to do with our country. In fact, if
they had it their way, God would be pushed
out completely.
But, just how much does God have to do with
America?
Well, ask yourself this question; “How is it
that we have come to be the most powerful
and successful nation in the world? Are we
that much smarter? Do we work that much
harder?” I don’t think so. I believe we are
the greatest nation in the world because we
have truly been blessed by Almighty God.
Now, if its truly God’s blessing that has
built this nation, then what does God expect
from us to keep His blessing?
Thousands of years ago a king, King Solomon,
asked that same question regarding his
nation, and this is what God said as
recorded in the Bible:
“If My people which are called by My
Name, shall humble themselves and pray, and
seek my face, and turn from their wicked
ways, then I will hear from Heaven, forgive
their sins, and heal their land”.
These are powerful words. But did our
founding fathers believe this? With all
their hearts.
Thomas Jefferson said, “I tremble for my
country when I reflect that God is just, and
that His Justice cannot sleep forever”.
Benjamin Franklin said, “God governs
in the affairs of men, and if a sparrow
cannot fall to the ground without His
notice, then an empire cannot rise without
His aid”.
You see, our founding fathers believed it
was truly God’s blessing that built America.
But, most importantly, that He expects from
those of us, the citizens of America,
something in return. To humble ourselves, to
pray, to seek His face, to turn from our
wicked ways.
Then, only then, will He heal our land.
In 1776 patriot Thomas Paine wrote the
famous words, “These are the times that try
men’s souls”. America was facing a terrible
trial, and no one knew just what would
happen.
Today, we face a terrible trial. As we all
can clearly see, in our nation we have
problems, much more serious problems than
any foreign enemy could bring upon us -
problems which are chipping away at the very
foundation our great country was built upon.
In short, America needs healing. And it is
the responsibility of each American today to
realize that the healing doesn’t begin with
the other guy - it begins with you and me –
in our hearts.
And if our nation is right with God, then,
with His help, with His blessing, we can
face any obstacle, stand against any threat,
endure any hardship.
Today, right now, thank God for our
wonderful nation, and ask Him with all your
heart, “Please God, Bless America”.
May God Bless America

Short Story
“That First Christmas Light”
Ever wonder who invented the first Christmas lights? Well think about this. Originally people trimmed their Christmas trees not with electric bulbs, but by placing burning candles on the limbs of the tree. They were beautiful, but also very dangerous. So next to the tree, just in case, they kept buckets of water.
Finally, in 1895, Ralph Morris, a telephone company employee, got an idea. He noticed the string of lights that lit up the telephone switchboard and he thought, "Why not?" He took that string of lights and placed them on his tree. Very interesting.
Speaking of Christmas lights, let us not forget that first Christmas light, that star God placed in the sky that first Christmas which lead the wise men and the shepherds to receive that first Christmas gift - the Christ child."
